Spectrum & Ozquilt Network’s AW5

The newly formed Brisbane based textile art group “Spectrum” had their inaugural display in Gallery 107 in Dalby, 2017/2018.

The exhibition was called Journey’s and featured major pieces from the collections of Brenda Wood, Kim Boland and Alison Charlton.
Guest Artists were Sue Duffy and Diane Flint.
As an added bonus to having such a large gallery space we were able to acquire 2 travelling textile art exhibitions.

One of those exhibitions Australia Wide 5, (AW5) was juried and curated by Ozquilt Network. 
Featuring 40 works by major Australian textile artists the magnificent display was of a very high calibre.

I was honoured enough to have my work chosen among the 40 to be displayed.

The collection of works that AW5 contains, can be viewed in it’s entirety on Ozquilt Network’s web page here, or in the video below.  However, having been able to get up close and personal with the works I would like to share with you some of the incredible details and diversity of materials that these works contain.

Stark Gumnuts by Lynette Weeks incorporated Commercial and hand dyed cottons, silk organza and rayon.  It’s all there.  All different types of fabric making up an interesting feature with printed sketches and eco dyeing adding extra subtle impact.

Feathering the Nest #8 – Nodders Swan by Jan Mullen is part of her current series. Interestingly she used paint chips and freehand stitching and digital manipulations.

Affinity 4 by Carolyn Sullivan has broken the rules of applique.  It’s all there and it all works.  Strip piecing, raw edge applique, slashed and stitched it looks great in its dishevelled layers.

Iris by Beth and Trevor Reid shows that simple is sometimes best. With hand painted raw edge applique and wholecloth quilting, the simplicity of the design and fresh colours are wonderful.

The Dream by Alison Withers, who is probably my favourite Australian Artist, has once again broken the constraints of conformity and used narrowly pieced black accents, with stitching of all kinds on an unusual palette of colour.

Silver Linings #4 – Seeds of Hope by Louise Wells has captured my heart with it’s wonderful textured colour, mixed materials and wonderfully subtle – yet not so subtle grey fabric and stitching that flashes and announces itself amongst the saturations of colour.

Storm #2 by Dianne Firth has used polyester net and acrylic paint.  Breaking with tradition her fabulous quilt is more “non” quilt than quilt!  The transparent nature of the netting allows reflections cast from the  design to form a secondary pattern on the gallery wall.  (Pictured here in a non gallery setting)

Rhythm and Blues by Cathy Jack Coupland’s colours pop!  Her attentive stitching fills the work in a repeated  design that is a timeless classic.

The Australia Wide 5 display continues to tour around Australia concluding in the first half of 2018.  Check the OZQN website for more details.  I would highly recommend viewing or Hosting these displays if you ever get a chance.  The quality and breadth of Australian talent on show is amazing.

 

AW6 will be the next touring display.  A bi yearly call to entries exhibiton, now in it’s 6th edition.
