Our Workshop in a Box tutor for January was Carley Cornelissen, an amazing visual artist and muralist here in my home town.. Brisbane.

For Carley’s workshop we chose a tiger as our main image, with a protea and Carley’s signature mini rainbow.

The tiger, as immense and powerful as ‘she’ was, was awed by our product that we highlighted this month… the amazingly powerful and versatile Derwent Inktense Pencils!
Inktense pencils are perfect for textile artists, as the colour and intensity and versatility that are enclosed in the product are amazing. Permanent on fabric and paper once dry, you can apply further colour over and the colours will not re-wet and blend. They can be used dry or wet, which turns the pigment into ‘ink’ hence the name. Click on the link above to learn more about them.
Carley’s medium of choice for this project was Fabriano Hot Press water colour paper – 300gsm… and boy is it great paper. It is 100% cotton, which also means that we can stitch into it as well to give us another dimension. (There are certainly advantages to being a textile artist, that other artists don’t have!)
Carley showed us how to apply colour to our tiger and gave us hints and tips to achieve great shading.. hence the name, shading secrets!
Then, because we are textile artists, we applied the lesson onto fabric.
This workshop was our feature workshop in January 2022. Workshop in a Box is a textile technique community that has a new guest tutor each month… and it comes with a box of the main items required to complete a lesson or project. While our current lessons are only available to current members, This fun workshop can now be purchased as a standalone box and lesson here: https://2sewtextiles.com/products/workshop-in-a-box-single
