Alison’s work in the Magic Carpet international exhibition explores her relationships and family connections. While we were exploring the topic of flying to where or what we miss the most, she was thankful for the familial relationships that she had in her immediate environment and contemplated those that were shut off from theirs. Hugs and kisses explores the physical and mental touch that our isolation effects.

Hugs & Kisses

by Alison Charlton
Hugs and KissesFibre reactive dyed cotton and silk, shibori, wax resist, acrylic paint. Embellished with hand stitching. Machine quilted. If I had a Magic Carpet during this difficult period, it would take us all to a time when self-isolation, lockdown and quarantine were not part of our daily lives. A time when people could touch others and offer comfort without apprehension and fear. A time when people did not die in quarantine without the comfort of loved ones. My textile piece represents the importance of relationships and physical communication with associates, friends and family.

Alison’s art focus is strengthened by her science background. She has a strong attention to detail and her quilts are something to admire in the digital form, but even more so in the personal form. Seeing them up close is a discovery of tiny details. She explores shibori, cyanotype, dying and complex screenprinting techniques.
